Creating with Alpaca Fiber Playshop

August 24 @ 2:00 pm 4:00 pm

The alpacas of Black Walnut Farm get a haircut once a year and their hair – called fleece or fiber – has many uses from being made into yarn to warming a wild animal’s nest to felted objects and clothing. In this Summertime Playshop, you’ll be making cat toys with alpaca fleece and dried catmint from the farmstead’s gardens, (for those who don’t have cats, yours can be made with another herb and used as an ornament!,) you’ll get to try your hand at carding and spinning raw fiber into a rustic yarn, and you’ll play with a simple felting project. Of course, the alpaca boys would love to meet you while you’re here too so a brief visit to the alpaca pasture will be part of your time here as well! All materials included in your register. For ages 16+ PLEASE REGISTER BY CALLING 803-868-5451 before August 17th.

Herb Concoctions Playshop

July 21 @ 1:30 pm 3:30 pm

At this point of the season, the Medicine Garden at Black Walnut Farmstead will be ready for some harvesting and that means it’s time to create some concoctions with herbs! We will dry some ahead of time for use but you will also get the chance to peruse the plants, learn a little about healing properties, and enjoy scents and textures … and then you get to concoct! On the plan for the day will be making a customized oxymel, (a concoction of vinegar, honey, and a selection of herbs,) and a yummy sugar scrub. All materials provided in your registration. For ages 16+ TO REGISTER, PLEASE CALL 803-868-5451 before July 14. Ask about a best friend’s discount!

Meet the Alpacas & Knit an Alpaca Scarf

March 9 @ 2:00 pm 4:00 pm

6 Huacaya Alpaca boys of varied colors live at Black Walnut Farmstead. We shear them once a year, and have their fleece made into yarn for crafting items to sell in our Little Country Store here.

On Saturday March 9th, local knitters are encouraged to come meet the guys, feel some raw alpaca fleece plus processed roving and yarns … and learn to complete a fabulous alpaca scarf led by York County knitting teacher, Daria Carden.  The scarf pattern is pretty easy so anyone who can comfortably knit & purl can master it once they learn 4 stitches.

Excited to get your hands in some alpaca fiber?

Register now! March 9, 2024, 2-4pm followed by encouragement to participate in our Creativity Circle for the 3 following Saturdays 12-2pm.  Limited class size for individualized attention. $65 includes all materials, pattern & instruction plus follow-up guidance plus the alpaca connection & a free herbal brew in our Tiny herbal Tea Room.
